Mars

MarsMars is symbolized by a cross in the form of an arrow above the circle of spirit signifying its outgoing centrifugal force, in contrast to Venus’ centripetal force. Mars and Venus are paired. They relate largely to masculine and feminine attraction among other things. The Earth, symbolized by the cross within the circle is located between Mars and Venus. Venus is within the orbit of Earth while Mars is outside the orbit of Earth. These two planets need each other because of their differences. People need both of these influences in order to balance the polarity of their existence. Culturally, we have allowed Venus to dominate the feminine role while Mars, the aggressor, assumes the masculine role, going out into the world to provide sustenance back to Venus ruled matter. This is changing. We all have both planets in our charts and we all need both influences. Mars represents the level of energy the individual has. It has to do with work and the ability to act. Mars also has to do with courage and the ability to hold your own in the outside world. Basically, Mars is pure energy which you may use to get a job done or to strike out in frustration; you may incur accidents or go into battle in the heat of passion. Mars rules the adrenal glands which, out of fear, prepare the body to attack, defend itself or run. Fear, hostility and anger are always irrational expressions resulting from an inability to deal with a situation in a more meaningful way. Mars energy, which is well controlled, provides the energy to accomplish any kind of project. It is best not waste energy in destructive outbursts.

When Mars is strong in a chart, the individual will be active. These people are doers. They get things done while others are still talking about it. But sometimes they overdo. They are enthusiastic, impulsive, headstrong, outspoken and often interested in sports. They would rather do the wrong thing than stand and wait. Much depends on the balance in the rest of the chart as to whether they make an organized use of their energy or succumb to the frustration of undirected activity. Everyone needs energy to accomplish their purpose in life. It is only when this purpose is ill-defined and undeveloped that the Mars energy needs to be controlled. A strong Mars is necessary for any kind of physical labor or people dealing with construction materials. An afflicted Mars may indicate a tendency to fevers. There may also be danger from fire.
